We talk a great deal about emotional intelligence in leadership today, but far less about emotional resilience. Emotional intelligence has become deeply embedded in modern leadership language. Leaders are encouraged to read the room, recognise emotional cues, demonstrate empathy, regulate tone, and communicate with awareness. All of this matters. In increasingly complex organisational environments, emotional intelligence is not optional. It is foundational.
Yet there is another capability, quieter and far less discussed, that often determines whether leaders remain psychologically clear under pressure or gradually become emotionally overwhelmed by the role itself.
That capability is emotional resilience – because awareness alone is not enough.
