The Quote That Started the Reflection
A quotation recently caught my attention while I was waiting in the reception area of a modern office building. Displayed prominently across an illuminated wall were the words: “You are not a leader until you have produced another leader.” The setting was impressive. The statement itself was elegant in its simplicity. Yet what remained with me afterwards was not the aesthetic appeal of the quote but the uncomfortable question it raised.
How many leaders genuinely measure their success in this way?
Leadership conversations frequently focus on outcomes. Organisations celebrate leaders who deliver ambitious strategies, rescue struggling projects, drive growth, reduce costs, improve performance, and navigate periods of uncertainty. Annual reports, award ceremonies and professional biographies tend to concentrate on measurable achievements and visible accomplishments. Success becomes associated with what a leader has personally delivered during their tenure.
Much less attention is given to what remains after the leader has departed.
